ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida wildlife officials are keeping a close eye on black bear activity in the Orlando area after a young bear was seen Monday morning, July 1, on an overpass above Interstate 4.

What We Know:

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed it is actively monitoring several bear sightings across the region, including the young bear observed on the I-4 overpass. By the time FWC officers arrived, the bear had already moved on, but officials spent much of the day canvassing the area for any further signs of it or additional bear activity.

According to FWC, these sightings align with typical summer behavior for black bears. This time of year, juvenile bears begin exploring new territories, and adult males increase their range in search of mates during the bear breeding season, which runs from June through August.

What Remains Unclear:

It’s not yet known where the bear went after leaving the overpass area. There have been no confirmed reports of the bear entering residential neighborhoods, and FWC has not indicated any plans to trap or relocate it at this time. So far, there are no reports of injuries, property damage, or confrontations related to the sighting.

The summer months are peak season for bear movement across Florida. Juveniles typically leave their mothers to establish new home ranges, while adult bears roam in search of food and mates. Increased sightings in suburban and urban areas like Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville are not unusual during this period.

The real concern, officials say, is preventing bears from lingering in human-populated areas by eliminating food attractants. Roughly 300 black bears are killed each year in Florida by vehicle collisions, often at dawn and dusk when visibility is low. Drivers, especially in rural and wooded areas, are urged to remain alert.
