Hurricane season in Fort Lauderdale comes around every year, and most of us are used to it by now. Still, this year could be more intense than usual. NOAA is predicting an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with 13 to 19 named storms and up to 10 hurricanes (NOAA via Disney Cruise Line Blog).

Even if we do not get a direct hit, heavy rain and wind can still cause serious problems. Flooding is always a big concern here, especially because our sewer and drainage systems are not the most reliable. Some streets flood after just a strong afternoon storm, so a tropical system dumping a few inches of rain can easily overwhelm everything. It is something locals talk about every year, and for good reason.

Around my neighborhood, people have already started prepping. I have seen folks clearing debris from storm drains, checking their shutters, and making supply runs early. I have been doing the same stocking up on essentials, going over my checklist, and making sure everything is charged in case the power goes out.

It is part of living here. You get used to watching the skies a little more closely this time of year, staying informed, and helping each other out when needed. Better to be ready now than caught off guard later.
