Holmberg Thrilled for New Chapter with Tampa Bay Lightning

After not receiving a qualifying offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Swedish forward Pontus Holmberg became an unrestricted free agent, uncertain about his next NHL destination. That uncertainty vanished when the Tampa Bay Lightning reached out, offering him a fresh opportunity. On Tuesday, the Lightning signed Holmberg to a two-year contract with a $1.55 million AAV, sparking excitement for the 26-year-old forward. “I’m joining a really good team, a winning team,” Holmberg said, expressing his enthusiasm for the move.

Last season, Holmberg played 68 games for the Maple Leafs, tallying a career-high 19 points with seven goals and 12 assists. Over his 159 NHL games, all with Toronto, he has recorded 30 goals, 49 points, and a plus-15 rating. Describing his playing style, Holmberg emphasized hard work and physicality. “Fans can expect effort,” he said. “I’m strong in the corners, good at protecting the puck, and I start with defense. I hope to contribute more offensively than last year.”

Lightning GM Julien BriseBois highlighted Holmberg’s fit with the team’s defensive identity. “He’s a hard-working teammate, competitive, feisty, and goes to the tough areas,” BriseBois said. “He draws penalties and strengthens our 5-on-5 play, making us a better defensive team.”

Holmberg, who is expected to start the 2025-26 season at center but can also play wing, previously teamed up with Lightning captain Victor Hedman for Sweden at the IIHF World Championship. Before his NHL career, Holmberg starred with Växjö Lakers HC in the Swedish Hockey League, earning playoff MVP honors and the Swedish Forward of the Year award after leading his team to the 2021 SHL championship with seven goals and 14 points in 14 playoff games.

With Tampa Bay, Holmberg is eager to elevate his game and contribute to a proven contender.
