Davie, FL – A massive and fiery crash involving a gasoline tanker truck and a transit bus brought traffic on Interstate 595 in Broward County to a standstill this past Sunday, May 25, 2025. The intense blaze sent thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, visible for miles, and caused significant disruption to holiday weekend travel.

The incident occurred around 10:00 AM on westbound I-595, near Flamingo Road. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the gasoline tanker sideswiped a disabled and unoccupied Broward County Transit bus that was parked on the left shoulder. The impact sent the tanker into the median, where it struck a wall and erupted into a massive fireball.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene. "I heard like a super loud boom, and I looked out my window and I saw black, really black smoke," said Fiorella Teodista, a nearby resident, describing the smoke as "really, really dark clouds" unlike anything she had seen before. Passing drivers reported feeling the intense heat from the flames through their car windows.

Emergency crews from Davie Fire Rescue, Sunrise Fire Department, and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue HazMat teams quickly responded to the scene. Firefighters battled the intense blaze, deploying foam to control the fuel fire.

The driver of the tanker truck was transported to Broward Health Medical Center with minor burns and is in stable condition. Fortunately, the bus driver was outside the vehicle at the time of the collision and was unharmed.

The crash led to the closure of all westbound lanes of I-595 and express lanes for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire, mitigate hazardous materials, and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted, causing significant delays for motorists throughout the day. Tow trucks and cranes were brought in to meticulously hoist and remove the charred remains of the tanker.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the exact cause of the crash. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while cleanup and investigation efforts continued. By Sunday evening, the roadway had largely reopened, but the memory of the fiery spectacle remained for those who witnessed it.
